World's Most Pup-u-lar Hotel

Jerry Grymek, Hotel Pennsylvania

Jerry Grymek, Hotel Penn Doggy Concierge.636Jerry Grymek is the "Doggy Concierge" at the Hotel Pennsylvania, which is recognized as the World’s Most Pup-ular Hotel and host hotel for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania is also pleased to announce it has been selected as the 2012 Pre-Westminster "Pet Friendly Hotel Of The Year" for its ‘Five-Paw’ service as it prepares to welcome all canine hopefuls participating in the 2012 event.

It's no wonder!  They go all out for the dogs and welcome them with open-paws!  No one does it better than the Hotel, which is known for hosting Westminster champions, including 2008 Best in Show winner Uno the Beagle and even the first ever ‘pup’tual Westminster wedding ceremony in 2011.

Some things you will see during the show are a 24/7 dog spa (probably the largest in New York!), complete with an animal communicator, pet psychic, grooming tables, his and her bathrooms and even a mall where they can go shopping.

Hotel Pennsylvania.636As Doggy Concierge, Jerry gets to help people out with their food requests.  Some of the orders he takes are for meatball pizza and cheeseburgers – but no onions!

The hotel will even have an opera singer on hand this year to serenade one of the dogs.   And last, but not least, there are going to be 4 pup-tial wedding ceremonies happening, called a Four Seasons Wedding event, as each couple will represent a different season.

The 136th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show takes place on February 13th and 14th, 2012 at Madison Square Garden, directly across from New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania.

Best Smile Contest

Bud Groth, PetzLife

Smilng Cat & Dog.636In celebration of February being Pet Dental Month PetzLife, the makers of pet teeth cleaning products, is conducting a "Best Smile Photo Contest," giving away a 1-year supply of their Oral Care and Other Natural Products to the pet owner that sends them a photo that is the best example of how much our companion animals make us smile!  Two runners-up will receive PetzLife's Oral Care Spray and Gel.  But don't worry if you don't win, because everyone who enters will receive 3% of any PetzLife product!

Bud Groth states that so far they have received some amazing pictures of dogs and cats smiling.  He said that they look so great, that you would think that they were photo-shopped – but they aren't!

Our dogs and cats need to have their teeth cleaned regularly, just like us humans.  However, our animals need to undergo anesthesia to have this done and unfortunately this is sometimes a risky procedure, especially with the older pet. Bud thought that there had to be a better way to clean our pet's teeth.   At PetzLife, you will find an Oral Care line of products, which include sprays and gels that do just that.

PetzLife Oral Care Spray & Gel.636The Oral Care Spray is specially formulated to end plaque and tartar buildup, and the all-natural ingredients kill harmful bacteria on contact. With your Pets mouth free from this bacteria breath becomes much fresher. It is not necessary to brush, but it will work faster if you follow directions and brush every 3rd to 4th day.

The Oral Care Gel comes in peppermint or wild salmon oil flavors and removes plaque and tartar from your pet's teeth--no toothbrush required! Made with all-natural, holistic ingredients, Oral Care Gel safely removes plaque and tartar, reverses oral disease, promotes healthy gums, brightens teeth and kills the bacteria that cause bad breath. The ingredients mix with your pet's saliva when applied on your pet's teeth and completely coat your pet's teeth and mouth.  This process kills harmful bacteria and loosens plaque and tarter. Safe for cats and dogs of all breeds.

PetzLife's products don't just work on cats and dogs, they can even be used on your horse or pet pig.  They are also currently being used on zoo animals and even dolphins.

Bud encourages you to try the product on yourself first.  That is his motto!  If anything that you ever buy for your pets state that it is not safe for human consumption, why would you give it to your pet!

PetzLife is also the "Best In Show" Sponsor for the 2012 Pre-Westminster Fashion Show, which marks the beginning of the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Weekend.

Should PETA'S License Be Revoked?

Justin Wilson, Center For Consumer Freedom (CCF)

Shelter Cat.636PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals) operates an animal shelter out of their headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia.  This shelter was recently investigated by the State of Virginia and the State Department of Agriculture Inspector actually attempted to revoke their ability to even take in animals because he was so distraught by what he saw.

PETA takes in hundreds, if not thousands, of animals every year at their shelter.  The inspector found out when he reviewed their records, that they are putting down 85% of these animals within 24 hours.

Are these animals unadoptable because they are ill or dangerous?  It is not known, because PETA has never provided any proof that they only take in the most down and distraught animals.

Investigations show that a few years ago there was a dumpster behind a Piggly-Wiggly in North Carolina, being filled up with euthanized animals.  The local sheriff did a stakeout.  One night he noticed a van pull up and saw people heave some black bags into the dumpster and drive away.  He pulled them over and it was PETA employees.  These employees had picked up animals from local shelters down in North Carolina, telling them they were going to find homes for the animals in Virginia, or elsewhere.  However, they put these animals "down" in the van before they even crossed the state line.  When these bags were opened up, some of the animals inside included puppies and a pregnant cat or dog.  These animals were imminently adoptable.  Some of the notes in PETA's own records stated that these animals were adorable.

Justin Wilson, of the Center For Consumer Freedom, (CCF), states that this notion that PETA is treating these animals ethically, doesn't seem to stand to reason.  No one really knows what's going on at their animal shelter, besides the Virginia Department of Agriculture, and they tried to revoke PETA's ability to even take in animals.

Justin mention there was also an incident when the Virginia Department of Agriculture Inspector showed up for a surprise inspection at PETA'S Headquarters in Norfolk, stating that he was there to inspect their shelter.   The woman at the front desk said, "I don't think we have a shelter.  I don't know what you're talking about."  The inspector told the woman, "You are taking in hundreds or thousands of animals a year and you don't even let the public come and look at them?"  They don't have open hours.  They don't have any of the things that a shelter should have.

PETA also doesn't believe that people should own animals as pets.  They believe in the ideology of total animal liberation.   Justin mentions a PETA spokesperson that stated, "You should open your doors and open your fences, and if your dogs or cats leave your home, then that should be their right.  They should be able to leave.

There is a stark difference with people who believe in Animal Rights and people who believe in Animal Welfare.   Although they seem to be somewhat similar in their mindsets, they are thousands of miles apart!

Animal Radio® News with Stacey Cohen

Paula the Penguin.636Probably Not A Good Idea to "Relieve" Yourself On A Senator's Desk!

An invited guest to the Kentucky State Senate unloaded on the legislative body in an unexpected way. Paula the penguin was brought to the Senate floor, representing the Newport Aquarium. The aquarium was being honored in the Senate for its contributions to the state's economy and the ecology of the world. While Paula sat on the desk of one of the state senators, it relieved itself. After Paula left its special offering behind, one of the senators asked if the penguin actually had floor privileges. Another senator remarked that it appeared the penguin had already taken care of the floor!

Bird bath heater.636Don't Just Feed The Birds!
Look at the wild birds just sitting there on a tree branch in 20-degree temps!  You wonder how will they survive?  No doubt a little help from us is always welcome.  Many people feed the wild birds all winter long but when there is no snow on the ground and everything is frozen it can be fatal. That's because it is so hard for them, especially a sparrow or chickadee, to get water. So outdoor birds will appreciate a basin or shallow bowl of water put out for them daily near the bird feeder. Or if you have a birdbath in your yard, you can also get bird bath heaters from most garden centers that will do a fine job of providing water for the birds all winter long.

Registry For Animal Abusers

A movement that started in Suffolk County, New York, is quickly spreading across the country.  Its goal: to require animal abusers to sign up for online registries much like those required for sex offenders.  The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty of Animals was the first in the country to set up an online registry in 2010 where convicted animal abusers must register a photo and current address for ten years, as well pay a $50 per year fee.  Now as many as five states including Arizona, Maryland, Florida, New York and Colorado have legislation pending.

Facebook Reunites Lost Pets
A veterinarian in East Tennessee has created a Facebook page to reunite lost pets with their owners.  Andrew Proffitt says he started "Lost and Found Pets of the Tri-Cities" about six months ago.  He said the idea came after getting calls from people who found animals and didn't know what to do with them and calls from pet owners who had lost their animals. "There was a real need there for a connection to connect the dots between pet and owner," he said. "You have someone call in to our office and they say they have found a pet and they do not know what to do other than take it to a shelter. I have nothing against shelters but these are someone's pets and they are lost.  You have the other side of it when someone calls and they are distraught about losing their dog or cat."  It is a helpless feeling but I decided to make something happen to make those situations come to a good conclusion.  Even though the site is only a few months old, Proffitt said it is already expanding.  This is a centralized way to kind of cut down on the amount of time a person can spend exhausting energy and power in what can be an upsetting situation. "This is part of the veterinary business that goes unseen; the amount of people who go for weeks and months searching for that pet that they love," Proffitt said. The site had gained almost 700 "likes" by mid-January.

George & Dorothea Murphy.63685-Year-Old Saves Husband From Moose Attack With Shovel
An Alaska man has his wife to thank for saving his life after an unfortunate encounter with a moose last week. The Anchorage Daily News reports 82-year-old George Murphy was walking the couple's dogs back to their truck when he was run down by the agitated animal. George's wife, 85-year-old Dorothea Taylor, was waiting in the truck when she heard the dogs barking and turned to see the moose stomping at something. She reportedly grabbed a shovel from the back of the truck and started to swing at the animal until he ran off. George was left with seven broken ribs and wounds to his head and legs, but is said to be on the mend. As for his Savior, Taylor said that they've helped each other out of problems before and this "just happened to be the latest."

Hints From Heloise Look Out!

I read this on a blog the other day.  If your dog's eating dog poo, the easiest thing to do is to clean up immediately after your dog goes. You can also use an additive in their food, such as canned pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie filling, just two to four tablespoons of plain pumpkin.  Or, you can feed your dog chunks of pineapple. A couple of chunks and that should make it so that the poo doesn't taste as good. You can also try increasing the quality of the Kibble. Sometimes if the dogs aren't getting enough nutrients, they want to eat it when it comes out, because it tastes real similar to what it tasted like when it went in!
