Rolling in Cat Pooh

Christy I would like to know why my dog likes to roll in cat pooh?

Doctor Debbie: You ask a great question that has plaqued many a dog lovers mind! Why do dogs savor their special "doggie perfume" - whether it be cat poop, cow dung, or a decaying carcass?

You may hear lots of theories out there from various animal experts, but the truth is that nobody really has an absolute answer. I tend to side with the belief that they are marking where they have been and just want to share their Eau de Poop. Dogs find many of these smelly things interesting and fun- and just want to include us with their games.

Another common theory is that it's an attempt to mask their scent- so they can hunt and not have their own scent picked up.

I truthfully believe dogs just find this behavior downright FUN! Note the joy in their body language when they do it. As the humans in the home, we cannot stand the behavior- but they just think it's a fine way to spend the day!

Best Wishes!
Dr. Debbie

My dog is slipping on smooth surfaces

Sandra: Dear Dr. Debbie, I have a quick question. My small dog is having much difficulty running and sometimes walking on smooth surfaces. Her pads are smooth and I think that is the problem. She is 8 years old and in good health.  Is there a product or something you can recommend to help her not slip. I'm concerned she will hurt herself. Thank you so much for the wonderful work you do. I listen to you on Animal Radio and appreciate your style and knowledge.  Best Regards, Sandy

Doctor Debbie: Hi there Sandy!

There are a couple things you can try...it just depends on what works best for her and your household.

The most effortless change is to provide throw rugs or yoga mats for traction. But of course not everyone wants to turn their home into a yoga studio! But sometimes a few strategically placed mats or rugs can help in the heavy traffic areas.

There are different styles of doggie booties sold through pets stores. But if you are the creative type you can purchase toddler socks that gave the "grippie" bottom on them. Then you need to sew a velcro fitting to the top to easily secure.

I've also had some folks with dogs in agility competitions use a product called "Firm Grip". It is a spray you apply to the bottoms of the feet and is made of a natural rosin.

I'd also make sure to mention her slippage on the floors to your vet. This can be a very early sign of orthopedic or neurologic problems- would be worthwhile to have the vet give her a good look and feel!

Thanks for tunining in to the show!
