CARING FOR CREATURES RADIO SHOW BECOMES ANIMAL RADIO NETWORK
===============================================
by Hal Abrams - Producer of the Caring for Creatures Radio Show

The one constant in life is change. The Caring for Creatures Radio Show is making a couple of changes. Good changes!

First, let me tell you that the quality programming you expect continues UNCHANGED.

On October 5th, the Caring for Creatures Radio Show becomes ANIMAL RADIO NETWORK.

You already know that all our profits go directly to the animals. Now we are spreading the wealth across the United States by naming multiple beneficiaries. And soon, eligible non-profit animal welfare organizations will be able to apply for grant monies from the non-profit Animal Radio Network.

Let me assure you that this is an opportunity to help more animals from more cities in the US. This change is not simply "good"... it's GREAT!

Log on to our NEW Website at http://animalradio.com - and listen for the Animal Radio Network coming this October.

JEAN DONALDSON'S TOP 10 DOG TRAINING TIPS
===============================================
Jean Donaldson, author of The Culture Clash and Dogs Are From Neptune, directs The San Francisco SPCA's Academy for Dog Trainers. Hear her this week on Caring for Creatures.

1. Expect your dog to act like a dog. Don't take it personally when he exhibits typical canine behavior. He's not being "bad," he's just being a dog.

2. No more free lunch. "Dogs are happiest when they're exercising their predator skills," she says. "Make them work for their food, like stuffing it inside chew toys, hiding it around the house, or teaching them tricks for food rewards."

3. Start off "tight" and slack off later, rather than letting him run wild for the first few weeks and then clamping down when the behavior isn't so cute anymore.

4. Don't wait for him to develop bad habits, like chewing the furniture or urinating on the carpet, before you intervene. Assume this behavior is likely to happen, and act preemptively to manage it before it develops.

5. Supply your dog with acceptable outlets for his doggy behavior, rather than punishing it.

6. Don't lay guilt trips on your dog. "Dogs are neither moral nor immoral," she says. "They're amoral, meaning that they respond to what they understand to be the consequences of their behavior. So manipulate those consequences."

7. Get involved in organized dog sports or informal activities, such as agility, Flyball racing, tug-of-war, fetch, or a fun game of hide-and-seek.

8. Provide a wide variety of social interactions every day. "What's the worst punishment a person can get in prison?" says Donaldson. "Solitary confinement. Dogs are social animals, too."

9. If you have a puppy, handle him endlessly. Make it as pleasant an experience as possible, so he'll associate being handled with good feelings.

10. Enroll in a good training course. The San Francisco SPCA Behavior & Training Department offers courses at every level, at reasonable prices. There are many other reputable trainers in your area as well.

ALLERGIC TO YOUR PET - A THREE PRONG APPROACH
===============================================
by Feline Nutritionist, Anitra Frazier. Hear her on the Caring for Creatures Radio Show this weekend.

Discovering that you are allergic to a beloved family pet can be a highly stressful and heart rending situation or...it can be the neon sign that lights the way towards greatly improved health and quality of life for you, your pets and the entire family.

An allergic reaction to pets has three separate and distinct causes that work together synergistically to our detriment. They are the allergic human's low threshold of tolerance for allergens, the pet's high output of allergins and the presence of numerous other allergins in the household and extended environment. Obviously, the best way to overcome the difficulties is to take a three pronged approach: Raise the human's threshold of tolerance, lower the amount of allergens being secreted by the pet and remove most of those other allergens polluting the household environment.

A person's low threshold of tolerance for allergens is a sign of a weakened and confused immune system and probable adrenal exhaustion. Here again, there is usually more than one contributing factor. Possible culprits could include vaccines, especially if multiple vaccines or repeated vaccines have been given. Use of steroids weakens the immune system as does a diet of all cooked foods. Caffeine and sugar will eventually exhaust the adrenals.

Conversely, a diet of mostly raw food will strengthen the immune system. Raw vegetables, nuts, yogurt and fruits are good choices. Avoid vaccines, steroids, caffeine and sugars and you're on your way to better general health and an increasingly higher tolerance to allergens. If you really want the fast track, try fasting one day a week on carrot-celery juice and lots of pure water. Include regular exercise and be conscious of your intake of fiber and pure water to keep the kidneys and intestines functioning efficiently. All this will gradually raise your threshold of tolerance.

Now for the pet. A high output of dander and other allergens is a sign of a slow metabolism and poor health. If you improve the pet's general health, the metabolism will become more rapid and youthful, the dandruff will disappear and the output of allergens decrease to a minimum. If you want the fast track here again, feed raw food twice a day and add my Vita Mineral Mix to each meal. ( See recipes at the end of the article). I keep canned food on the shelf for emergencies. I use only Pet Guard or Halo because they are the freshest, the highest quality, the most delicious and the most digestible.

The smell of food between meals slows the metabolism in the animal and the slow metabolism causes wastes to build up. The body will handle the back-up of wastes by shoving some of them out through the pores as dandruff. So clean well after feeding your pet. If you have dry food in the house, keep it in air tight containers. The animal can easily smell it if it's standing around in bags or boxes in the cupboard. Don't use it as food. It's over processed and hard to digest and assimilate. Call it cookies and use it only as a treat, five or seven pieces is a lot of cookies. Here again I use Pet Guard brand because of quality and digestibility.

Adding Vita Mineral Mix to the meals will provide some nice fiber to keep the intestines youthful and efficient and the lecithin in the formula emulsifies fatty wastes so they can be carried off by the blood and disposed of in the urine and stool instead of being pushed out through the pores as dander. There's a recipe for Vita Mineral Mix in my book. The New Natural Cat or you can buy it ready made by the Halo Company in pet supply and health food stores.

If the allergens produced by the pet seem like the straw that broke the camel's back, it follows that we have two choices: either get rid of the pet or get rid of the allergens produced by the pet as well as most of the other allergens in the environment. In other words keep the pet and get rid of a lot of the other straws.

Environmental allergens are divided into three categories: Particulates, or fine particles such as dust, smoke, pollen, dander, dust mites and their fecal matter; Bio contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, mildew and mold spores; and Gasses like ammonia, Chlorine acetone and formaldehyde. That sounds like you'd have to be living in a chemical factory, right? Not so. All of these gasses are commonly in the air you breath inside the modern home. Formaldehyde molecules are released continuously, 24 hours a day from plastics, especially plastic that is bendable like shopping bags and waste paper baskets. Other sources of gas pollution are magic markers, glues, cleaning products, vinyl, artificial fibers used in carpets and furniture, room deodorizers, fabric softeners and particle board (that stuff they use as the back of wooden furniture; take a look at the back of your book case or desk). If you add to this the fact that breathing the air in most cities is equivalent to inhaling upwards of a pack of cigarettes a day it is easy to imagine how your threshold of tolerance could be undermined. Indeed it is no wonder that each year higher percentage of the population shows symptoms of allergies.

The answer to environment pollution is some sort of an air cleaning system. You have your choice of air filtration, negative ion generators or ozone generators. Air filtration will help some and they seem to be the cheapest at first glance, but they have limitations and serious hidden costs. The smallest molecules will escape right through the filter and be blown back into the air again. Filters must be changed regularly; if you operate the machine with a dirty filter you'll be much worse off than if you had no machine at all. Filter replacements cost between twenty and eighty dollars. This type of machine uses lots of electricity; it can add from $40 to $60 dollars per month to your electric bill. I don't use that kind.

I use an air cleaner that produces negative ions and ozone, like you find in nature at the sea shore or before a thunder storm. It's the size of a stereo speaker. There are no filters to buy or replace and it uses the same amount of electricity per month as a 30 watt light bulb. It costs me about a $1.50 per month to operate it 24 hours a day. At first, the cost of the machine seemed expensive (around $500) but then I realized that in two or three years I'd save more that the other machines cost to operate. I've had it six years now and its' paid for itself several times over. It's certainly the most efficient and effective machine I've ever heard of. It takes care of every category of pollutant or allergen: dander, mold spores, dust mites, bacteria and all those tiny gas molecules like formaldehyde and acetone. No molecule, large or small, can escape the negative ions on the ozone. They all literally fall out of the air to the floor and get vacuumed away. So, there is your three pronged approach.

How many of all these things you will need to do will vary from one individual to another depending upon how low your threshold of tolerance is, and how much pollution and how many allergens are floating around in your environment. If you hit any snags as you go along, I am available for individual telephone consultations by appointment between 9:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M. Eastern Standard time. Call 212-663-0122 and leave your name and number.

May you and your animals enjoy success and good health!
