YOUR OPINION - WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY (Who you support)
===========================================
As always, we welcome your response to articles in our bi-weekly newsletter.
Last week we asked: "What organizations do you support financially. Do you
respond to direct mail solicitations from animal related organizations? Why
did you select to support these particular groups?"
We wish we could publish all the e-mail, but there is simply not enough
space in this newsletter. You may view other responses online at
http://animalradio.com.
___________________________________________
"What organizations do you support:
*Anonymous responded:
I support many and wish I had lots of money to support more. Some I give
to monthly are: Best Friends, Alley Cat Allies, Humane Society of United
States, North Shore Animal League. There are many others that I give to 2
or 3 times a year (ASPCA, Northeast Animal Shelter, Amer. Humane Assoc.,
National Humane Education Society, IFAW, Animal Rescue Foundation, Doris Day
Animal League, Homes for Endangered Pets (a local rescue group in Belton
Missouri - they are trying to raise funds for a no-kill, cage-less shelter
and right now can only take in what animals they can find foster homes for).
I do get tired of getting the 2, 3 or 4 requests every day from animal
groups asking for money. I wish I could give to them all but can't and wish
groups would not pass my name around because I always feel badly that I
can't help and feel they are wasting money by sending me mailings (some of
them sending mailings often).
*Anonymous responded:
I cannot say if this group does all it says it does, but I trust them with
my contributions. It would be nice for all individuals who donate to the
Humane Society of the US to receive a quarterly statement every six
months as to what the agency has succeeded in as well as failed in. To be
kept up-to-date with what's going on is very important, and maybe I would
donate more. Thanks.
*Michele Tegen of Milwaukee, WI responded:
I just wanted to say there are many organizations I would love to be able to
support, but the one that I do regularly is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
I have had the pleasure of visiting this sanctuary twice and it truly is an
amazing place. I believe they do everything right, and I admire them for
not shying away from expressing their Christian values.
*Michelle Lukasiewicz of Chandler, AZ responded:
I do not respond to direct solicitation from groups, especially when they
give away free things to join them. I feel the money is better spent on the
animals. I like to support local groups because than I can actively be a
part of their work and also have the selfish satisfaction of seeing good
deeds for animals and meeting caring people. Go vegetarian!

BATHROOM CATS:
*Cheryl Dare responded:
I, too have cats who have to come in the bathroom while I'm using the
throne, especially Peanut, Woody and Cleo, and when I shower, either Cleo or
Woody or both, stand (well, sit) sentry on the bathmat till I finish and
open the shower curtain.
___________________________________________
MORE PETA:
*Tracey Skibo responded:
PETA needs a different approach! Maybe before we jump on the bandwagon and
discuss all the cruel things we do to animals (which I agree there are many)
we need to think of ways to control the human population of the country and
control the urban sprawl which is eliminating natural habitat of many
animals.
Why do they continue to market the make-up that so many animals suffer a
life of scientific study, so they can look beautiful? What about all those
filthy rich people that spend their time in spa's, at horse racing tracks,
at polo-clubs, eating the best the sea, river and land can give them.
If PETA wants to control this then they better get big bucks and a lot of
help. Until this entire country is forced to spay and neuter every pet they
own, unless they can prove themselves quality breeders by being licensed by
the government, educated and controlled before they so much as breed one
animal, this problem will always be a problem. PETA if you want to be
effective...start with education of the public! Spay and neutering, don't
breed unless your breeding quality purebreds and have homes lined up in
advance. Educate with commercials that "age is normal". We don't need to
be using makeup to try and alter age. Animals suffered for that! Don't
present only the problem...develop a reasonable, inexpensive solution or be
ready to financially help support the changes. I understand PETA's goals
and believe they have many legitimate concerns, however their views are
sometimes most unrealistic and they don't look at the big overall picture.

HOLOCAUST ON YOUR PLATE:
*Debbie Lagomarsino of Paso Robles, CA responded:
Having never done this before, I felt strongly enough to attempt a response.
Listening to your show (April 13, 5:30 - 6:00p.m. PST), I heard the segment
about the animal activists having some kind of traveling exhibit likening
the treatment of cows, pigs, chickens, etc. to the Holocaust. I want to
register my vote: it's appalling and should not continue. I was horrified
that they would liken treatment of the Jewish people to animals of any kind.
It's truly degrading and completely insensitive. Thanks for allowing me to
register my opinion.

ED SAYRES TO HEAD ASPCA STARTING JUNE 2nd
===========================================
HAWK TO MA - SAYRES TO NY - CRAIN TO SFO
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
announces that Edwin J. Sayres has been appointed its 16th president and
CEO. Sayres, a frequent guest on Animal Radio Network, will assume his
duties in New York on June 2nd. Ed Sayres was formerly President of the San
Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA), a
"no-kill" shelter that is a model for animal shelters nationwide.
SFSPCA Vice President Daniel Crain replaces Ed Sayres in San Francisco.
Outgoing ASPCA President Dr. Larry Hawk moves to Massachusetts, and will
head up the SPCA.
Prior to joining The SFSPCA in 1998, Sayres was the Director of PETsMart
Charities, where he administered the Grants Program, distributing more than
$3 million to local humane societies. He also managed the In-Store Adoption
Program in collaboration with local humane societies, resulting in the
placement of more than 170,000 animals annually. Before joining PETsMart, he
served as Director of the Animal Protection Division at the American Humane
Association. Sayres serves on the Board of Directors of the Delta Society
and the California State Humane Association.
MESSAGE FROM ED SAYRES:
"On May 15th, I will be leaving the San Francisco SPCA to become President
and CEO of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals) in New York City. The offer to head the ASPCA represents an
unexpected and unparalleled chance for me to improve the fate of homeless
animals nationwide. Making a difference for animals on such a sizable scale
is a unique personal and professional opportunity. I leave The SFSPCA with
pride in our accomplishments, abiding admiration for the staff and
volunteers who carry on the mission and deep appreciation for the generous
contributors who make the SFSPCA's lifesaving work possible." -Edwin Sayres
BUT, WHAT NOW FOR SFSPCA?
Finally, The SF/SPCA has developed a solid succession plan that positions
the organization to sustain its reputation as a leader in animal welfare.
Daniel Crain joined The SFSPCA in 1999. As Vice President for the past
three years, he has been responsible for day-to-day operations of the
organization's 165 employees, an annual budget of more than $11 million and
more than 900 active volunteers. He came to The SFSPCA with 19 years of
leadership and management experience and is a graduate of the Harvard
Business School's Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management. Crain is
an able and experienced leader prepared to guide The SFSPCA and advance its
achievements in saving homeless cats and dogs.

FUND FOR IRAQI ZOO ANIMALS SET UP
===========================================
by Benjamin Ehrman
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has set up a special fund
in order to raise money that will be used to provide food, veterinary care
and other necessities for animals in the zoos in Iraq.
The action was taken in response to neglect resulting from economic
sanctions imposed by the United Nations 13 years ago and looting that has
occurred during the last two weeks.
"We are alone here," said Baghdad Zoo veterinarian Hashim Mohamed Hussein.
"Without help, our animals will die."
According to Hussein, the animals in the zoo were last fed full meals on the
day before coalition forces entered Baghdad.
"(The animals) are hungry, but we have no money with which to buy food,"
said Hussein.
The IFAW, which will be working in Iraq in conjunction with the World
Society for the Protection of Animals, has pledged $25,000 of its own to the
fund.
The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad, which is based in London,
England, and other animal welfare organizations are expected to undertake
relief efforts in Iraq as well.

TWO MILLION ANIMALS ARE STOLEN EACH YEAR
===========================================
Only about 10% are ever returned home.
What happens to stolen pets?Ê
They are used in the following ways:
*Sold to research laboratoriesÊ
*Fighters or bait in dog-fightingÊ
*Breeders for puppy millsÊ
*Meat for human consumptionÊ
*Meat for exotic animalsÊ
*Fur for clothing and accessoriesÊ
*For sale in pet storesÊ
*DissectionÊ
*Protective guard dogsÊ
*Ritual sacrifice for satanic cultsÊ
*Sadistic actsÊ
The United States Department of Agriculture licenses animal dealers. Anyone
selling animals to laboratories (or selling more than 24 dogs or cats per
year at the wholesale level) must be licensed. Many of the people involved
in the sale of stolen animals are licensed by the federal government. Class
A dealers maintain their own breeding colonies while class B dealers obtain
animals from "random sources." For a $50 fee, anyone can acquire a USDA
Class B dealer license. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS) inspectors are responsible for seeing that dealersâ records
are current and complete, and for ensuring the health and safety of the
animals. Unfortunately, the USDA has not made the latter a priority, for
there is a shortage of inspectors and enforcement of existing regulations is
extremely weak.
Where do "random sourceä animals come from?
Many are stolen from someoneâs backyard. Others are obtained through "Free
to a Good Homeä ads. B Dealers prey on unsuspecting people who can no longer
care for their companions. "Bunchersä acquire animals for free by making
fraudulent promises of a good home and tender care, then selling the
animals, sometimes the same day, to Class B Dealers. Most will be sold to
research facilities, many of which are funded by tax dollars. Researchers
prefer to experiment on pets and other animals that have lived with people
because they tend to be docile and easy to handle.Ê
What is "pound seizure?"
Pound seizure, in which animals who arrive at the pound are required by law
to be turned over to laboratories for experimentation on demand if they are
not reclaimed by their guardian or adopted out, is still in effect in some
animal shelters. Some pounds therefore must or choose to sell animals to
Class B dealers or research facilities.
Investigations of Class B dealers have revealed:
*Live dogs in cages with dead dogsÊ
*Dogs suffering from parvovirus, distemper, and rectal bleedingÊ
*An open burial pit containing several dog carcasses in various states of
decay
*Large dogs in cages with small dogs and female dogs in cages with male
dogs, both violations of the Animal Welfare ActÊ
*Live dogs eating dead dogsÊ
What You Can Do to Protect Your Pet
*Keep your pet indoors, especially when you are not at home. Do not leave
animals unattended in your yard; it only takes a minute for thieves to steal
your pet. Do not let your pet roam free in the neighborhood.Ê
*Remember that indoor cats live longer, safer lives.Ê
*Keep companion animals safely inside your home when you are expecting
repair personnel, meter readers, or guests.Ê
*Properly identify your pet with a collar and tag, microchip, and/or
tattoo.Ê
*Know where your pet is at all times.Ê
*Maintain up-to-date licenses on your pets.Ê
*Keep recent photos and written descriptions of your companion animals on
hand at all times.Ê
*Spay and neuter your pets. Fixed animals are less likely to stray from
home.Ê
*Be aware of strangers in the neighborhood. Report anything unusual such as
suspicious neighborhood activities or missing pets to the police and animal
control.Ê
*Padlock your gate; outdoor dogs should be kept safely behind a locked
gate.Ê
*Make sure that your animal is not visible from the street.Ê
*Keep your pet on a leash whenever you go outside.Ê
*Do not tie your pet outside a store to wait for you.Ê
*Never leave an animal unattended in a car.Ê
Finding a Good Home for Your Pet
*If you use "Free to a Good Home" advertisements to place your pet,
make sure you know as much as possible about the adoptive home before giving
your pet away.Ê
*Donât place an animal until your interview the prospective adopters, visit
their home, photocopy their picture i.d., record their driverâs license
number and license plate number, and check their references.Ê
*Ask prospective adopters about their prior pets, how they would care for
and discipline your animal, and the name of their veterinarian.Ê
*Ask the neighbors of potential adopters about the number of animals they
have seen coming into and out of the adopterâs home and related questionsÊ
*Have the adopter sign an adoption contract reviewed by a humane
organization and pay an adoption fee.Ê
*Do not allow potential adopters to take an animal from your home; always
deliver the animal yourself.Ê
*Consider taking your animal to a rescue group or asking rescue group staff
how to conduct an adoption on your own.Ê
You Can Help
*Adopt animals from shelters. Never buy from pet stores ösome stores sell
stolen pets or animals from puppy mills.Ê
*Spay or neuter your animals and educate others about doing the same. With
cats and dogs in such high abundance, dealers have no trouble filling their
cages.Ê
*Ask the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create and enforce regulations to
stop pet theft. Write to: Ann Veneman, U.S.D.A., 14th and Independence,
S.W., Washington,D.C. 20250.
*If a stolen animal is positively identified in a dealer's possession,
report it to LCA and to USDA officials in your state; ask that the dealer's
records be inspected.Ê
*Educate family, friends, and neighbors about pet theft and what they must
do to keep their animals safe.Ê

EXCEPTIONALLY LUCKY DOG SURVIVES CALAMITIES
===========================================
A dog named Dosha may have as many lives as a cat. She was hit by a car,
shot in the head and kept in a freezer for two hours, but she survived and
is now doing well under a veterinarianâs care.
Local animal groups and the humane society of the United States have begun
fund-raising efforts to pay for her care.
Unfortunately, when Dosha was hit by a car, a Clearlake police officer shot
the dog, apparently to save her the pain of her injuries. Dosha, presumed
dead, was taken to animal control where she was put in a freezer.
About two hours later, Denise Johnson, animal controlâs interim director was
at the impound facility and was told of the incident.
"Apparently she was presumed dead, and I went to the freezer and found that
she was alive and cold", Johnson said, "she had hypothermia and a gunshot
wound, but no broken bones from the car accident" stated Johnson.

FINAL THOUGHT - CAT CHAT
===========================================
Top 10 Signs That You Are A Crazy Cat Lady (or man)
1. Your colleagues no longer ask how your weekend was. Instead they ask how
your cats are doing.
2. People at work have stopped offering you their lint brushes. They realize
it's hopeless anyway.
3. When you get your latest roll of film developed, there's not a single
human being in the pictures.
4. You have more cats than the local pet store and there are several kitty
litter boxes in every room of your apartment.
5. Your personal motto is: "You can never have enough cats."
6. You buy more than 60 pounds of cat litter a month.
7. You'd rather watch hours of boring infomercials than disturb the cat
sleeping on the remote.
8. You choose your friends based on how well your cats like them.
9. The only time you leave your apartment is to feed the stray cats in the
neighborhood.
10. You introduce your cats by name to the pizza delivery guy.
