Suzette: Hey Guys: I am new to your show but had a friend suggest I ask for your help.. I will try to make this as short as I can. I just rescued this cute dog from my cousin who used her to breed for 5 years. Now, when I got her (feb 7-2010) I would take her out every 2 hours to potty. Oh by the way I am an expeditor and I travel all the time in a truck. She would go by me saying her name and be a big girl and hurry. Now she just looks at me and returns to the truck without going. She has become real stubborn most of the time.. I feel bad when I get angry at her because she doesn't understand when we need to hurry. I am afraid that maybe she isn't adapting to traveling all the time... She is very loving and gets excited when I get back in the truck from a pick up and delivery... She has added alot of joy for me but I am getting frustrated with some of the things she is doing..Like taking her food out of the bowl (which she has never done) I hope I have shared enough to get some suggestion?? Thank You in advance.

Doctor Debbie: Hello Suzette. You didn't mention if Gibby was having any urination accidents during travel. If so, then I might be more worried about her urination pattern. Otherwise it's important to remember that puppies need to go quite frequently, but adult dogs really won't need to urinate as often as every 2 hours. The only exception would be a dog that is drinking alot, very active, or swimming alot. Most adult dogs are comfortable urinating every 4-8 hours. My feeling is that Gibby is looking at you funny because she really doesn't have to urinate and is wondering why you don't understand what she's trying to say! :)

I often see female small/toy breeds develop the nibbling habit where they remove a single kibble from the bowl, place on floor, then eat the bit. It's not a big deal, just a quirk she has. Some folks will try shifting away from a dog bowl to a plate to see if that curtails the behavior. So overall...It sounds like you have a wonderfully darling Shih Tzu that enjoys your company and is doing just fine with travel.
